Chapter 6 - The Secret Safe

|
That evening, Edward was scheduled to attend an emergency board meeting in the city. Victoria had personally made sure to remind him three times, encouraging him to take his time and drive safely in the rain.
The moment Edward’s tail lights disappeared down the long driveway, Victoria acted.
She walked purposefully into Florence’s master suite. The room was dimly lit, smelling faintly of lavender and mint. Florence was sitting in her armchair by the fireplace, her frail legs covered by a knitted blanket, reading a book.
Florence looked up, surprised to see Victoria entering without knocking. "Victoria? What is the meaning of this?"
Victoria closed the heavy oak door behind her and turned the lock with a sharp, heavy click.
"Where is the key to the wall safe, Florence?" Victoria asked coldly, walking toward the old woman with measured, terrifying steps.
Florence’s eyes narrowed, her hand instinctively moving toward the silver-handled cane resting against her chair. "Get out of my room, Victoria."
"I read the letter from your lawyer," Victoria sneered, pulling the steam-opened document from behind her back and tossing it into Florence’s lap. "Fifteen million to a shelter? You think you can treat me like garbage and leave us with nothing?"
Florence looked at the documents, her frail shoulders lifting in a deep, weary breath. "You married my son for his money, Victoria. I saw through you from the day you walked into this house. You don't love Edward. You are a leech."

"I am his wife!" Victoria screamed, her composure completely shattering. "And I am taking what is mine!"
Victoria grabbed Florence by her thin wrists, dragging the screaming, frail woman out of her chair toward the grand portrait in the hallway.
