Chapter 19 - The Flames of Revenge

|

That night, a thick fog rolled over the Vance estate. Edward sat in his father’s study, a glass of bourbon resting untouched on the desk beside his pistol.

Outside, the distant sound of a car engine cut off near the front gates.

Edward stood up slowly, walking to the window. Shadowy figures were moving across the lawn toward the house, carrying heavy duffel bags.

He didn't panic. He walked down to the grand foyer, standing in the exact spot where his mother had been attacked months ago. He turned on the grand chandelier, illuminating the cream marble floor in a bright, warm glow.

The heavy oak front doors were suddenly kicked open with a deafening bang.

Three men in black tactical gear stepped inside, raising suppressed weapons. Leading them was Carter, Victoria’s attorney—his suit gone, replaced by a black leather jacket, a cruel grin on his face.

"Hello, Edward," Carter said smoothly, stepping into the light. "Did you really think Victoria was the brain behind this operation? She was just the pretty distraction."

"You want the estate," Edward said calmly, standing his ground.

"We want the land deed," Carter corrected, aiming his gun at Edward's chest. "Sign the property over to our corporate shell company, and we might let you walk out of here alive."

Edward looked down at his father’s gold ring on his finger, then looked up at Carter with an icy smile.

"My mother told me that a house built on gold will crumble," Edward said softly. "So I decided to change the foundation."

Edward pressed a button hidden inside his jacket pocket.
