Chapter 20 - The Unseen Shadow

|

Instantly, floodlights exploded around the perimeter of the mansion, illuminating the foyer with blinding intensity. The heavy iron security shutters slammed down over every door and window with a thunderous metallic crash, trapping Carter and his men inside.

From the second-floor mezzanine, armed federal agents moved into position, their laser sights painting red dots across Carter’s chest.

"FBI! Drop your weapons!" a loud voice boomed through the loudspeakers.

Carter’s eyes widened in sheer horror. He dropped his gun, raising his hands as the agents swarmed the foyer, slamming the intruders onto the cream marble floor and slapping heavy handcuffs onto their wrists.

An agent walked up to Edward, offering a crisp nod. "Excellent work, Mr. Vance. Thanks to the evidence you provided from your father's vault, we’re taking down the entire Apex network tonight."

As the agents dragged Carter away, the lead operative handed Edward a satellite phone that had been confiscated from Carter’s coat pocket. The screen was actively flashing an incoming call from an untraceable international number labeled simply: THE ARCHITECT.

Edward looked at the blinking screen, his heart pounding in his chest.

He slid his finger across the screen to answer, placing the phone to his ear.

"It seems you are far more capable than your father was, Edward," a low, smooth, heavily disguised voice spoke through the line. "You destroyed Victoria, and you neutralized Carter. But do not mistake a won battle for a finished war."

"Who are you?" Edward demanded, his voice hard as steel.

The caller let out a soft, chilling laugh that sent a shiver down Edward’s spine.

"I am the person who built the foundation you stand on," the voice whispered. "Look under the marble in your mother's garden, Edward. Ask yourself why your father really hid that key."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Edward stood alone in the grand foyer, holding the quiet phone, looking down at the gold ring on his finger as the flashing red lights of law enforcement spun outside the steel shutters. The monsters in the mansion were gone, but a vast, shadowy door had just swung wide open.
