Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The sun set behind the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, casting long, dark shadows across the grand manicured lawn. Edward Vance stood on the balcony, watching his wife, Victoria, glide through the rose garden below. She wore a tailored silk dress, her blonde hair catching the twilight, looking every bit the refined mistress of the mansion.

"You look distant tonight, darling," Victoria said, stepping onto the balcony moments later, her voice smooth and sweet.
Edward offered a weary smile, slipping an arm around her waist. "Just tired, Vic. Managing the family trust and overseeing the estate's restoration takes a toll."
"It wouldn't be so exhausting if your mother finally handed over the full power of attorney," Victoria murmured softly, resting her hand against his chest. "She's getting older, Edward. It’s impractical for her to hold the final signature on every single asset."
Edward felt a sudden chill in the air, though the summer evening was warm. "Mother built this life with my father. It’s her right to oversee it for as long as she wishes."
Victoria’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her dark eyes flashing with a cold intensity before her gentle facade returned.
"Of course, my love," Victoria whispered, kissing his cheek. "I only care about our future."
Later that night, as Edward slept, Victoria stood in the dark hallway outside Florence’s wing. She listened to the muffled sound of the elderly woman coughing behind the heavy oak door. Victoria tapped her manicured nails against the antique wallpaper, her face hardened by impatience.

"Tick-tock, old woman," Victoria whispered to the empty corridor. "My patience is running out."
She walked back to her master suite, opening her locked jewelry box. Hidden beneath velvet tray linings were stacks of unpaid luxury credit card statements and delinquent gambling debts from high-stakes private casinos. Victoria was drowning in millions of dollars of hidden debt, and Edward’s mother was the only wall standing between her and absolute ruin.
