Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Damian glanced down at his paralyzed legs. Then his eyes drifted toward the tray of amber medication bottles resting on the table.
For three agonizing years, he had truly believed his own body had betrayed him. For three years, he had accepted the dark, depressing reality that he would never stand up, never walk, never be whole again.
And for three years, the woman he had planned to marry had ruthlessly controlled nearly every single decision about his recovery, isolating him from the truth.
He looked back up at Mia.
“Bring me my phone.”
Vanessa stepped aggressively forward. “Who are you calling?”
“My own doctor,” Damian replied coldly.
“Damian, please listen to reason—”
“A doctor that you do not choose for me.”
Vanessa stopped moving, realizing she had completely lost control of the situation.
Mia hurried to the desk, grabbed his sleek black cell phone, and handed it to him.
Damian dialed a number from memory. He didn't put it on speaker, but the room was so quiet Mia could hear the phone ringing.
When a man answered, Damian's voice was dangerously quiet, practically a whisper.
“Anthony. I need a physician at the mansion. Tonight.”
He listened to the voice on the other end for a moment.
“No. Not anyone who has ever treated me before. Bring someone from outside the city.”
Damian’s dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Vanessa.
“And I want every single medical record from the hospital spanning the last three years delivered to my study by morning.”
He ended the call and tossed the phone onto the bed.
Vanessa's hands were visibly shaking now. She was losing her grip on the empire she thought she controlled. “Darling, you're making a terrible mistake. You’re letting a clumsy maid manipulate you.”
Damian ignored her entirely. He turned his chair slightly to face Mia.
“There's one more thing,” Damian said.
“Yes, sir?” Mia asked, stepping closer.
“Earlier, when you accidentally pressed that hot towel against my knee…” He hesitated, as if afraid to speak the words aloud. “I felt something else.”
Mia leaned closer, her breath catching. “What did you feel?”
May you like
Damian slowly looked down at the floor.
“My toes.”
