Chapter 11 - The Truth About the Crash

Damian stopped breathing entirely.
Because until that exact moment, he had truly, deeply believed the horrific crash that had destroyed his ability to walk—and killed his loyal driver—was simply a tragic accident caused by black ice on a dark road.
And Vanessa had just handed him a terrifying reason to question that reality, too.
“What do you mean?” Damian asked, his voice a low, lethal rumble that seemed to shake the floorboards.
Vanessa sobbed, sliding down the door until she sat on the hardwood floor, ruining her expensive silk dress.
“I didn't plan it!” she cried hysterically. “I swear to God, Damian, I didn't know they were going to hit your car! They just told me they needed you out of the way for a few months to take over the South Side shipments!”
“Who is ‘they’?” Damian demanded, gripping the wheels of his chair, preparing to haul himself forward if he had to.
“My father!” Vanessa shrieked, burying her face in her hands. “My father and Dr. Sterling! They paid the truck driver to run you off the road. They needed you incapacitated so my family could absorb your territory while we were engaged. Dr. Sterling prescribed the heavy nerve blockers to make sure you never fully recovered.”
Mia gasped, stepping backward, horrified by the sheer, unadulterated evil of the conspiracy.
Damian’s face turned to absolute stone. The woman he had loved, the woman he had trusted with his life, had been poisoning him for three years on her father’s orders.
“You knew,” Damian whispered. “You knew my driver was dead. You knew I was trapped in this chair. And you smiled at me every single day.”
Vanessa looked up, her makeup running down her face in dark streaks. “I loved you! I convinced my father to let you live! They wanted to kill you, Damian, but I begged them to just paralyze you so I could take care of you forever!”
It was the most twisted, sickening confession of love Damian had ever heard.

He reached for his phone again. He didn't call a doctor this time. He called his security chief.
“Anthony,” Damian said coldly. “Bring four men to my bedroom. Now. And lock down the entire estate. Nobody leaves.”
