Chapter 15 - The King Returns

|

The docks at Pier 4 were a war zone. Smoke billowed into the night sky, and the deafening sound of automatic gunfire echoed off the steel shipping containers.

The DeLuca hitmen were advancing aggressively, pinning down the outgunned Russo guards. Don DeLuca himself stood safely behind an armored SUV, smoking a cigar, watching what he believed was the final destruction of his greatest rival.

Suddenly, the screech of tires cut through the chaos.

Four black, heavily armored SUVs smashed through the chain-link gates of the pier, skidding to a halt forming a barricade.

The doors flew open, and dozens of heavily armed Russo enforcers poured out, returning fire with lethal, devastating precision. The tide of the battle shifted instantly.

Don DeLuca frowned, dropping his cigar. “Where did these reinforcements come from?” he shouted to his lieutenant.

Before the man could answer, the rear door of the lead SUV opened.

The battlefield inexplicably went quiet as both sides stopped to watch.

Damian Russo stepped out of the vehicle.

He wasn't in a wheelchair. He wasn't leaning on a cane. He stood at his full, terrifying height of six-foot-three, wearing a dark trench coat that whipped in the wind from the harbor. He looked like the grim reaper himself, holding a suppressed handgun.

Don DeLuca’s jaw literally dropped. The cigar fell from his mouth.

“Impossible,” DeLuca whispered, stumbling backward. “He’s paralyzed. He’s crippled!”

Damian didn't run. He walked slowly, deliberately, straight into the center of the chaotic battlefield. Bullets sparked against the containers around him, but he didn't flinch. He raised his weapon and fired three rapid, perfect shots, taking down the three closest DeLuca hitmen.

The sight of the supposedly paralyzed king walking through gunfire completely broke the morale of the attacking forces. The DeLuca men panicked, dropping their weapons and scrambling for their vehicles in sheer terror.

Damian kept walking until he was standing just ten feet away from Don DeLuca.

“You look surprised, Antonio,” Damian said smoothly, his voice carrying over the crackling fires.
