Chapter 6 - The Retired Doctor

|

Damian was still intensely examining his left leg, his mind racing.

Vanessa quickly reached out for the silver medication tray.

“Darling, you're getting yourself far too worked up over a clumsy mistake,” she said soothingly. “Let me give you your evening pills so you can rest.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s hand froze mid-air.

“What?”

“Not tonight,” Damian said firmly.

She laughed, a high, nervous sound that echoed in the quiet room. “Damian, don't be ridiculous. You need them for your nerve pain.”

He slowly lifted his dark eyes to meet hers.

“Who told you that?”

“Your doctor, darling.”

“Which doctor, Vanessa?”

Vanessa blinked, visibly caught off guard by the interrogation. “Dr. Bennett, obviously.”

Damian stared at her, his expression turning to stone.

“Interesting.”

“What is?” she asked defensively.

“Dr. Bennett retired and moved to Florida eight months ago.”

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Mia felt a cold chill slowly move down her spine.

Vanessa's confident smile completely disappeared. She swallowed hard.

“Well… his replacement at the clinic continued the exact same treatment plan.”

Damian leaned forward, his massive shoulders tensing.

“Then tell me his replacement's name.”

Vanessa opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Her mind scrambled for a lie, but under Damian's lethal gaze, she was paralyzed.

Damian didn't wait for an answer. He turned his head toward Mia, who was still standing nervously near the door.

“Come here.”

Mia hesitated, then slowly approached his chair. “Yes, sir?”

“There's a locked drawer beneath my medical cabinet,” Damian instructed, his voice low. “Open it.”

Vanessa immediately stepped directly between Damian and the maid.

“Damian, you're upsetting yourself over nothing!” she argued, panic leaking into her tone.

He didn't even look at her. He didn't raise his voice.

“Mia. Open the drawer.”

Mia bypassed Vanessa and moved toward the tall oak cabinet. She pulled the bottom drawer open. Inside were neatly arranged medical reports, prescription logs, and several thick, sealed manila envelopes.

“Take out the blue folder,” Damian ordered.

Vanessa's face turned ashen white. She lunged forward. “Damian, those are highly confidential medical documents!”

He finally looked at his fiancée, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, cold fury.

“Then why are you so frightened of a maid reading them?”
