Chapter 14 - The Ambush at the Docks

|

The fragile peace in Chicago couldn't last forever.

Six months after Vanessa’s betrayal, the DeLuca family grew impatient. Assuming Damian was still a crippled, weak leader hiding in his mansion, they launched a massive, coordinated attack on the Russo family’s most lucrative shipping port on the South Side.

It was a bold, arrogant move meant to embarrass Damian and seize control of the city’s underground imports.

Damian was sitting in his study, reviewing financial documents with Mia, when Anthony burst into the room.

“Boss, they’re hitting Pier 4,” Anthony reported urgently, his weapon already drawn. “It’s a bloodbath. DeLuca’s men are burning the warehouses. They think we’re too weak to respond.”

Damian’s eyes turned pitch black. He carefully closed the ledger on his desk.

“Gather the men,” Damian commanded, his voice deadly calm. “We are going to Pier 4.”

Mia stood up, her face pale with worry. “Damian, you shouldn't go. You’re still recovering. It’s too dangerous.”

Damian looked at her, his expression softening just a fraction. He stood up from his desk chair. He didn't lean heavily on his cane. He stood tall, imposing, and terrifyingly strong. The physical therapy had worked miracles.

“I have to go, Mia,” Damian said, walking smoothly around the desk. “DeLuca thinks I’m a broken man in a chair. It’s time I showed him exactly who rules this city.”

He walked to a hidden wall safe, opened it, and pulled out a heavy, matte-black handgun, sliding it seamlessly into his shoulder holster.

“Stay here. Lock the doors. Do not let anyone in but Anthony,” Damian ordered, kissing her quickly on the forehead—a gesture that sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core.

Damian and his heavily armed convoy sped out of the estate gates, heading straight into the fiery chaos of the docks. The king was finally returning to his battlefield.
