Chapter 28 - Memories Under the Oak

On a sun-drenched afternoon many years later.

Ethan leaned heavily on a cane, walking slowly toward the back garden.

Rosa walked beside him, holding his arm to support him.

They walked up to the old oak tree.

The ropes of the wooden swing had been replaced many times over the decades.

At the base of the tree, wildflowers bloomed between the massive, sprawling roots.

Ethan bent down, using his cane to gently sweep away a layer of dry leaves.

Three small stones were still there.

Worn down by the wind and rain, embraced completely by the roots into the earth.

But they were still together.

Nothing could ever separate them.

Rosa rested her head on her husband's shoulder.

"Do you regret anything?" she asked.

May you like

Ethan looked at the three stones, then at the mansion that was now echoing with the laughter of a third generation.

"I only regret that I didn't find you and her sooner."
