Chapter 20 - The Empty Nest

Time waits for no one.

Lily was eighteen, preparing to leave for college.

Her luggage was neatly packed in the foyer.

The massive mansion suddenly felt far too vast for Ethan and Rosa.

"I can't believe she is leaving," Rosa said, resting her head against the doorframe of Lily's empty room.

Oliver was currently in his third year of college studying Architecture.

Now, Lily was spreading her wings to fly too.

Ethan wrapped his arms around his wife's waist from behind.

"We raised our birds so they could fly, Rosa."

"I know."

"But our nest will always be right here."

Lily ran down the stairs, radiant and bursting with energy.

"I'm ready!"

The whole family piled into the car, driving her to the campus three hours away.

When her dorm room was all set up, it was time to say goodbye.

Lily hugged Oliver tightly.

"Don't forget to call me."

"Only if you promise not to be a crybaby," Oliver teased.

Lily turned to hug Rosa and Ethan.

"I am going to miss you all so much."

Ethan discreetly wiped the corner of his eye.

"We are always so proud of you, Lily."

Driving back, the backseat was completely empty.

Rosa held Ethan's hand.
