Chapter 21 - The College Essay
A week after Lily left, Ethan was cleaning out the study.
He found a draft of Lily's college admission essay forgotten beneath a drawer.
The title of the essay was bolded.
Three Small Stones.
Ethan put on his glasses and began to read.
"Many people think that growing up in a mansion means having everything."
"But my greatest wealth isn't the house."
"My greatest wealth lies beneath an old oak tree."
"Three small stones."
"It is the promise of my parents, two people who found each other through profound trauma."
"They taught me that a family isn't made up of people who never make mistakes."
"A family is made up of people who choose to stay and fix those mistakes together."
Tears fell from Ethan's eyes onto the white paper.
Rosa walked in, saw him crying, and rushed over.
"What's wrong?"
Ethan handed the paper to her.
Rosa read it, and then she cried too.
Tears of absolute fulfillment.
