Chapter 23 - The Siren's Warning

By nightfall, Gabriel had mobilized fifty extra armed operatives across Boston.
Noah’s school was placed under 24-hour invisible surveillance, and Harper was assigned a personal detail of four elite guards whenever she left the estate grounds.
In a hidden basement beneath a warehouse in the Italian North End, Gabriel stood over a captured operative—a Frenchman pulled from a hotel room near the harbor.
"Who sent you?" Gabriel demanded, his voice dangerously low as he leaned over the bound man.
The operative spat blood onto the concrete floor, laughing softly with a thick European accent.
"You think you own Boston, Vance?" the man sneered.
"Moreau remembers when you were just a hungry street kid in Europe. He gave you this city. And now that you’ve gone soft for a maid and her little brother, he’s coming to take it back."
Marcus stepped forward, his pistol drawn, but Gabriel raised a hand, stopping him.
"Moreau thinks I’ve gone soft?" Gabriel asked softly, his tone chillingly polite.
"You put a ring on a girl’s finger," the operative mocked.
"You bring children into a mob fortress. You became weak, Gabriel."

Gabriel leaned down, his pale eyes burning with a dark, primordial fury that made the operative’s laughter die instantly in his throat.
"You tell Moreau," Gabriel whispered, "that loving her didn't make me weak. It gave me something worth killing for."
