Chapter 16 - Fire and Glass

|
The grand hallway of the mansion was a warzone. Smoke filled the air, smelling of cordite, burnt carpet, and copper.
Gabriel moved like a shadow through the corridors, every shot fired hitting its intended target with lethal precision. He wasn't just fighting; he was executing a masterpiece of tactical violence.
At the end of the long hallway stood Viktor Vance’s second-in-command, holding an assault rifle aimed directly at the library entrance.
Gabriel stepped out from behind a marble pillar, firing three rapid shots that eliminated the threat instantly.
Harper followed closely behind him, clutching a heavy brass statuette she had grabbed from the parlor—determined not to be a helpless victim anymore.
Suddenly, a heavy boot slammed into Gabriel from a side doorway.
A massive mercenary tackled Gabriel to the floor, knocking his pistol out of his grip. The two men wrestled wildly across the glass-strewn hardwood.
The mercenary gained the upper hand, pinning Gabriel down and raising a serrated combat knife, preparing to drive it into Gabriel’s neck.
"Gabriel!" Harper shrieked.
Without hesitation, Harper rushed forward, swinging the brass statuette with every ounce of strength in her body.
CLANG!
The heavy brass struck the mercenary cleanly across the temple. The man groaned, dazed, and slumped to the side.
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He wrapped his hands around the mercenary’s throat, neutralizing him instantly.
Gabriel rose to his feet, breathing heavily, his chest heaving. He looked at Harper, who stood trembling over the unconscious brute, her knuckles white around the brass statue.

A fierce, prideful spark ignited in Gabriel’s pale eyes.
"Remind me never to get on your bad side, sweetheart," he breathed, snatching his pistol from the floor.
