Chapter 14 - Storm on the Horizon

|

By mid-afternoon, the calm began to shatter.

Marcus entered the library without knocking, his face grim.

"Boss, we’ve got a problem. Lawson just issued a federal bench warrant for Harper’s arrest. He’s claiming she stole classified police files and kidnapped her brother."

Gabriel didn't lose his temper. Instead, his eyes went entirely black with rage.

"He’s using state machinery to drag her into the open."

"It gets worse," Marcus added, lowering his voice.

"Vance’s mercenaries have surrounded the outer perimeter of Beacon Hill. They’re dressed as tactical police officers. If they strike, they’ll claim it was an official federal raid."

Harper stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains, having overheard every word. Her face was paper-white.

"Hand me over, Gabriel," she begged, her voice trembling.

"If they raid this house, people will die. You’ll lose everything you built!"

Gabriel turned to her, his movements fluid and precise. He walked over, placing his heavy hands on her shoulders, grounding her.

"Listen to me very carefully, Harper," Gabriel said, his baritone slicing through her panic.

"I built an empire out of blood and iron. Do you honestly think a corrupt detective and a harbor thug can take it from me?"

"Gabriel—"

"Marcus!" Gabriel barked, never taking his eyes off Harper.

"Initiate Protocol Alpha. Seal the gates. Prepare the basement safe room for the boy."

"Right away, boss," Marcus replied, rushing out of the room.

Gabriel looked down at Harper, his thumb stroking her jawline.

"Stay close to me, Harper. Today, Vance learns why they call me the King of Boston."
