Chapter 45 - The Signing
The Fortress Bill officially passed the state senate and the house of representatives. It was a monumental, historic victory for financial advocacy.
The Governor invited me, James, and a small coalition of advocates to the state capitol for the official signing ceremony.
The Governor's office was grand and historic, filled with cameras and reporters. I stood directly behind the massive oak desk as the Governor picked up his pen.
"Today, we are changing the landscape of family law in this state," the Governor announced to the press. "Thanks to the tireless advocacy of Emma Davis and The Vanguard Initiative, we are sending a clear message: financial abuse will not be tolerated, and those who hide assets to harm their families will face the full weight of the criminal justice system."
He signed the document, the scratch of the pen echoing loudly in the silent room. He stood up and handed me the official signing pen.
"Congratulations, Emma," the Governor smiled. "You changed the law."
I took the pen, feeling the immense, historical weight of the moment. The terror I had felt standing in my garage ten years ago, discovering the hidden receipts and the undeniable proof of betrayal, had been entirely transmuted.
