Chapter 23 - THE GRADUATION

Time moves differently when you aren't living in fear.

It moves smoothly.

Quietly.

Before I knew it, Noah was graduating from fifth grade.

The school auditorium was packed with proud parents holding cameras.

I sat in the third row, my father sitting proudly beside me.

Noah walked across the stage, grinning from ear to ear.

He was tall for his age.

Smart, funny, and incredibly kind.

He wore a small blue tie and held his certificate high in the air.

"He looks like you," Dad whispered.

I smiled.

"He acts like you," I replied.

After the ceremony, we stood in the courtyard taking pictures.

Noah ran off to hug his friends.

I watched him, marveling at how resilient he was.

He didn't remember the night the police raided the house.

He didn't remember hiding in the closet.

I had protected him from the trauma.

But I knew the day was coming when I would have to tell him the truth.

About his father.

About what almost happened.

As if reading my mind, Dad put a hand on my shoulder.

"You don't have to tell him everything today," Dad said.

"I know," I sighed.

"But he's starting to ask questions."

"He asked why Ethan never calls."

Dad frowned.

"What did you say?"

"I told him Ethan made some very bad choices and isn't allowed to."

"He seemed to accept it for now."

Noah ran back over to us, holding a half-eaten cupcake.

"Can we go get pizza now?" he asked.

"Of course," I laughed.

We piled into the car and headed to his favorite restaurant.

As we sat in the booth, laughing and sharing a pepperoni pizza, I realized how perfectly ordinary this moment was.

And how fiercely I had fought for it.

I looked at my son, laughing at a joke his grandfather made.

I had won.

The nightmare was officially over.

We were safe.

We were happy.

And absolutely no one could take that away from us.
