Chapter 36 - The Gala

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of The Vanguard Initiative, we hosted a massive philanthropic gala at the grand ballroom of the city’s premier hotel. The goal was to raise capital for a legal defense fund specifically aimed at helping low-income women escape financially abusive marriages.
The ballroom was stunning, decorated in deep silver and navy blue. The room was packed with city officials, prominent lawyers, and survivors whose lives we had helped reclaim.
I stood near the grand staircase, wearing a sleek, tailored silver evening gown that mirrored the bracelet on my wrist. I felt incredibly powerful.
"You look like you're ready to conquer a small country," a deep, warm voice said from behind me.
I turned and smiled at James. He was the senior partner at the law firm we contracted for our most aggressive litigation. James was brilliant, deeply empathetic, and entirely unintimidated by my success. Unlike the men of my past who needed me to shrink so they could feel large, James operated on a foundation of absolute mutual respect.
"I'm just conquering the local court circuits for now," I teased, taking the glass of champagne he offered me.
"The mayor is here," James noted, looking across the room. "He wants to speak with you about the new legislative proposals you've been drafting. You're making serious waves, Emma. People are terrified of ending up on the wrong side of your audits."
"Good," I said, my smile hardening into a fierce resolve. "They should be."
May you like
James looked at me, his eyes filled with a quiet, profound admiration. "You really built something incredible out of the dark, Emma. It’s an honor to stand in the light with you."
We clinked our glasses together. The celebration was just beginning.
