Chapter 27 - THE BRACELET

It was my fortieth birthday.

My father hosted a small dinner party at his house.

Just close friends, Noah, and me.

After dinner, Dad handed me a small, beautifully wrapped box.

"Open it," he smiled.

I untied the ribbon and lifted the lid.

Inside rested a delicate silver bracelet.

It was almost identical to the one I had bought for Claire all those years ago.

The one that led me to the garage.

The one that unraveled my entire life.

I stared at it, a wave of memories rushing back.

"I know what you're thinking," Dad said gently.

"But I didn't give it to you to remind you of the bad."

"I gave it to you to remind you of the victory."

I looked up at him.

"That bracelet represents the day you stopped being a victim."

"The day you took control."

"It's a symbol of your strength, Emma."

I smiled, tears welling in my eyes.

He was right.

I lifted the bracelet from the box and handed it to him.

"Will you help me put it on?"

Dad smiled and fastened the clasp around my wrist.

The silver caught the light of the chandelier.

It was beautiful.

I looked around the room at the people who truly loved me.

My father, who had stood by my side with a baseball bat in the dark.

Noah, who had grown into a brilliant, kind young man.

My friends, who had supported me through the darkest days.

I touched the cold silver of the bracelet.

I had survived the ultimate betrayal.

I had lost my husband, my sister, and my sense of security.

But in the ashes of that life, I had built something impenetrable.

I had built a fortress.

And I was the queen of it.

I raised my glass of champagne.

"To the truth," I said.

Everyone raised their glasses.

"To the truth," they echoed.

I took a sip.

It tasted incredibly sweet.
