Chapter 29 - The Vanguard Initiative

My office was located in a sleek, glass-fronted building downtown. The bronze plaque next to the double doors read: The Vanguard Initiative: Financial Advocacy & Truth.
I walked in, greeting my team of accountants, private investigators, and legal aides. We were a specialized strike force, dedicated to dismantling the financial cages that abusive spouses built around their victims.
My lead investigator, Marcus, met me at my office door with a thick manila folder. "Good morning, boss. We have a new client. Her name is Elena. Married twelve years. Her husband is claiming complete insolvency, but she found a strange key hidden in his golf bag. It led her to a private storage unit."
I took the folder, walking over to my desk. The echo of my own past rang in my ears—the garage, the hidden receipts, the silver bracelet. The methods of liars were always unoriginal.
"She thinks he’s hiding assets?" I asked.
"She knows he is," Marcus corrected. "But she doesn't have the proof, and his lawyers are threatening to take custody of their kids if she pursues a forensic audit."

I opened Elena’s file. Her face looked exhausted, terrified, and desperate. It was the exact face I used to wear.
"Call her in," I said, my voice hardening into absolute resolve. "Tell her not to sign a single piece of paper. We are going to find every penny he buried, and we are going to leave him with nothing but the clothes on his back."
