Chapter 22 - THE FOUNDATION

Two years after the trial, I found my true calling.

Working with Sarah and the other victims, I realized how massive the problem of financial abuse truly was.

Identity theft by a stranger is terrifying.

Identity theft by a spouse is devastating.

Because it doesn't just destroy your credit.

It destroys your reality.

I used a portion of my recovered inheritance to start a non-profit organization.

We called it The Anchor Project.

Our mission was simple.

We provided free legal aid and forensic accounting services to women who suspected their partners of financial fraud.

We helped them track hidden assets.

Uncover shell companies.

Find the money before it disappeared overseas.

My office was downtown, just blocks from where Marcus's firm used to be.

It felt like poetry.

One afternoon, a woman walked into my office.

She was terrified.

Shaking.

Holding a stack of credit card statements she didn't recognize.

"My husband says I opened these," she whispered.

"He says I have a spending problem and just forgot."

"He wants me to go to a clinic for memory loss."

I looked at her, seeing my own reflection from three years ago.

The exact same gaslighting.

The exact same manipulation.

I walked around my desk and handed her a tissue.

"You are not crazy," I said firmly.

"You did not forget."

"He is lying to you."

The woman looked up at me, tears spilling over her cheeks.

"How do you know?" she asked.

I smiled gently.

"Because I've heard this exact story before."

"And I know exactly how to prove it."

We spent the next four hours going through her statements.

I showed her how to trace the IP addresses used to open the accounts.

I introduced her to our pro-bono lawyers.

By the time she left my office, she wasn't shaking anymore.

She walked with her head held high.

Watching her leave, I felt a deep sense of purpose.

Ethan had tried to make me a victim.

Instead, he had inadvertently trained his worst enemy.

Every time we caught a fraudster, every time we recovered stolen funds, I took a piece of my power back.

I was no longer Emma Lawson, the woman who was scammed by her husband.

I was Emma Lawson, the woman who dismantled empires.
