Chapter 7: The Last Move

Arthur's instincts activated before his mind finished processing Emily's warning.
"He came for Lily?"
Emily nodded, her face pale.
"Richard doesn't think like normal people. He doesn't run when he's cornered. He attacks the thing he believes gives him power."
Arthur immediately pulled out his phone.
Lily.
He called once.
No answer.
Again.
Still nothing.
A cold feeling settled in his chest.
Agent Harper was already speaking into her radio.
"Secure the hospital. Possible threat against the victim."
The room changed instantly.
The quiet coffee shop became a place of urgency.
Emily looked toward the window.
"I told him I needed time. I told him I could fix it."
Arthur looked at her.
"You were still trying to protect him?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
Her voice broke.
"I was trying to survive him."
For the first time, Arthur saw something other than betrayal in her eyes.
Fear.
The same fear he had seen in Lily.
Richard had not only hurt his daughter.
He had built a world where everyone around him became afraid to say no.
At the hospital, two federal agents stood outside Lily's room.
The hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
One agent touched his earpiece.
"Something's wrong."
The other looked at him.
"What?"
"The security camera near the east entrance just went offline."
They immediately moved.
Inside the room, Lily opened her eyes.
She heard footsteps outside.
Not the sound of doctors.
Not nurses.
Someone moving carefully.
The door handle slowly turned.
Lily froze.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
"Ms. Bennett?"
A man's voice.
Calm.
Professional.
But something about it felt wrong.
Lily reached for the emergency button beside the bed.
The door opened.
Before the person stepped inside, a federal agent appeared behind him.
"Stop right there."
The man froze.
A moment later, security officers surrounded the hallway.
The visitor immediately raised his hands.
"I'm a lawyer."
The agent looked at his identification.
Then at Lily.
"Did you request legal representation?"
Lily shook her head.
"No."
The agent took the man's documents.
Something wasn't right.
The lawyer had arrived without an appointment.
Without hospital authorization.
And he had somehow known exactly where Lily's room was.
Back at the coffee shop, Agent Harper received the call.
Her expression changed.
"They tried to reach Lily."
Arthur stood immediately.
"Is she safe?"
"Yes."
He exhaled.
Only slightly.
But the danger was clear.
Richard was moving faster now.
He knew the walls were closing in.
Emily looked at Arthur.
"He has another plan."
Arthur turned.
"What plan?"
Emily hesitated.
"The papers."
"What papers?"
"The ones he showed you."
Arthur remembered.
The fake custody documents.
The accusations about Lily being unstable.
Emily continued.
"Richard created backup plans for everything. If Lily tried to leave, he planned to destroy her reputation first."
Agent Harper frowned.
"How?"
Emily looked down.
"He has recordings. Edited recordings."
Arthur's expression darkened.
"He wants people to believe Lily is the problem."
Emily nodded.
"Exactly."
Agent Harper looked at the flash drive.
"Then this is the key."
She connected it to her secure laptop.
Files appeared.
Hundreds of them.
Financial transfers.
Private messages.
Audio recordings.
Names.
Dates.
Everything Richard had spent years hiding.
Then one file appeared at the top.
FINAL CONTROL PLAN
Everyone became silent.
Arthur looked at the screen.
"Open it."
Agent Harper clicked.
The document loaded.
It was dated two months earlier.
The first line made everyone's blood run cold.
If Lily attempts separation, begin reputation destruction protocol.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Richard hadn't reacted to the situation.
He had prepared for it.
Agent Harper continued reading.
"The plan includes false medical claims, witness manipulation, and financial pressure."
Emily whispered:
"He was never planning to let her leave."
Arthur looked at the screen.
For two years, Richard had believed he owned Lily's future.
But he made one mistake.
He forgot something important.
Lily was not alone anymore.
And neither was Arthur.
Agent Harper closed the laptop.
"We have enough to move."
Arthur looked at her.
"What happens now?"
She answered calmly.
"Now we stop defending ourselves."
A pause.
"Now we expose him."
Outside, the sun began setting over the city.
Inside Richard Hale's mansion, he sat alone in his office.
For the first time in years...
He looked afraid.
Because his phone had just received a message.
Your evidence has been compromised.
Richard stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
Arthur Bennett knows everything.
For a long moment, Richard said nothing.

Then he slowly smiled.
Because even cornered men sometimes believe they still have one final move.
