Chapter 4: The Person Behind the Mask
Arthur stood silently in the driveway, staring at Agent Harper.
"Someone helped him?" he asked.
The agent nodded.
"We don't know the full extent yet. But these documents show Richard had assistance."
Arthur looked back toward the mansion.
The white tents.
The Easter decorations.
The guests who had watched Lily suffer and chosen silence.
His eyes moved across every person still standing on the property.
For two years, Richard had convinced everyone that Lily was lucky to have him.
But now Arthur wondered how many people had helped build the lie.
"Who?" Arthur asked.
Agent Harper opened the folder again.
"We found communication between Richard and several people. Most of it is financial. Some of it involves reputation management."
"Reputation management?"
"People who make problems disappear."
Arthur's expression hardened.
Richard had not only controlled Lily.
He had created a system around himself.
A system designed to protect him.
Across the driveway, Richard's mother suddenly stepped forward.
"You are making a huge mistake," she said.
Agent Harper turned.
"Mrs. Hale, you need to remain where you are."
The older woman ignored the instruction.
"My son is a respected businessman. This entire situation is being exaggerated because of one emotional woman and an angry father."
Arthur looked at her.
For the first time, he didn't see an arrogant woman holding a mimosa.
He saw someone who had spent years protecting a dangerous secret.
"You knew," Arthur said.
Her expression shifted.
"Knew what?"
"You knew what your son was doing."
The crowd became quiet again.
She laughed nervously.
"Don't be ridiculous."
Arthur stepped closer.
"You knew enough to lie for him."
Her face tightened.
"You have no idea what you're talking about."
Agent Harper raised her hand.
"Mrs. Hale, we will be speaking with you later."
That made her stop.
Not because of the words.
Because of the certainty behind them.
Meanwhile, inside the mansion, investigators continued collecting evidence.
A technician approached Agent Harper with a tablet.
"We recovered the security system."
She looked at the screen.
"What did we find?"
The technician hesitated.
"Multiple recordings."
Arthur's attention immediately shifted.
"From today?"
The technician shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"From the last two years."
Arthur felt a wave of anger rise inside him.
But he controlled it.
The recordings were evidence.
Not an excuse to lose control.
"Can we view them?" he asked.
Agent Harper nodded.
A small group gathered inside the mansion.
The beautiful living room looked different now.
The same room where Richard had claimed Lily fell.
The same room where everyone had looked away.
The first recording appeared on the screen.
Lily was sitting on the couch.
She looked younger.

Richard stood nearby.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then his voice changed.
The kindness disappeared.
"You need to understand something, Lily. Nobody is going to believe you over me."
Arthur clenched his fists.
The next recording showed Richard taking Lily's phone away.
Another showed him convincing her friends that she was becoming unstable.
Another showed his mother telling Lily:
"A good wife protects her family's reputation."
Arthur looked away.
Every recording felt like another piece of his daughter's life being stolen.
Then the final video loaded.
The timestamp was from three weeks earlier.
Richard was sitting in his office with someone else.
Someone Arthur recognized.
His heart stopped.
Because the person sitting across from Richard was not a stranger.
It was someone Lily trusted.
Someone who had been invited to every family gathering.
Someone who had smiled at Arthur while secretly helping destroy his daughter.
Agent Harper looked at Arthur.
"Do you know this person?"
Arthur stared at the screen.
His voice became quiet.
"Yes."
A long pause.
"That's Lily's closest friend."
The room went silent.
The woman on the screen leaned forward and handed Richard a folder.
Then she said something that changed everything.
"Once Arthur believes Lily is unstable, the house, the money, and the inheritance will all belong to you."
Arthur felt the truth settle in.
This was never only about control.
It was about what Lily had.
And what Richard wanted to take.
Agent Harper closed the laptop.
"Mr. Bennett, this is much bigger than an assault case."
Arthur looked toward the hospital where his daughter had gone.
Then back at the mansion.
