The foundation’s lead accountant rushed into Lily’s office, holding a printed bank statement.
"We just received an anonymous wire transfer," the accountant said, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"It’s for two million dollars."
Lily took the paper, her brow furrowing in deep, analytical suspicion.
She immediately tasked her forensic team to trace the origin of the massive, unprompted donation.
Within hours, they traced the money back through several shell companies to a prominent real estate developer.
It was a man who had been one of Richard Hale’s oldest and most profitable silent business partners.
He had attended the Easter parties.

Lily did not return the money, but she also did not accept it blindly.

"I wanted to help the foundation," the developer explained, refusing to make eye contact.
"I saw the interview. I knew what Richard was doing, and I did nothing."
"This money is my attempt to make amends for my cowardice."
Lily looked at him with absolute, unyielding clarity.
"You cannot buy absolution, and you cannot purchase a clear conscience," Lily stated firmly.
"I will accept this money, but it will not buy your name onto our donor wall."
"It will not earn you a public thank-you at our annual gala."
"This money will be used exclusively to hire three new forensic accountants to hunt down men exactly like you."
The developer swallowed hard, nodding slowly in complete, defeated understanding.
"That is exactly what I expected you to say," he whispered.
Lily walked out of the meeting with two million dollars of enemy capital successfully repurposed.
