Chapter 16 - The ghost of Richard Hale attempted to reach beyond the concrete walls of his prison.

It arrived on a Thursday, hidden within a stack of mundane legal mail forwarded by Lily's attorney.

It was a sealed envelope stamped with the official insignia of the federal correctional facility.

The handwriting on the front was undeniable.

It was the sharp, aggressive scrawl that used to sign the checks that controlled her entire existence.

Lily stood in her kitchen, staring at the envelope as it rested on the granite counter.

Her heart rate spiked immediately, the old, familiar terror whispering darkly in the back of her mind.

He was trying to reach her.

He was trying to inject his poison back into her safe, quiet world.

She imagined the contents of the letter.

It would be filled with manipulations, false apologies, or veiled, terrifying threats.

He wanted her to read it so she would spend days analyzing his words, giving him power again.

She reached out, her fingers hovering just inches above the paper.

She could feel the psychological weight of the man who had stolen her twenties.

Arthur was napping in the guest room; she was completely alone with the ghost.

Slowly, she pulled her hand back.

She did not open the envelope.

She did not rip it into pieces.

She calmly picked it up by the very edge, as if handling a piece of toxic waste.

She walked into the living room and turned on the gas fireplace with a flick of a switch.

The flames roared to life, bright and consuming.

Lily held the unopened letter directly over the fire.

"You don't get to speak to me anymore," Lily whispered into the empty room.

She dropped the envelope into the center of the flames.

The paper curled, blackened, and ignited, turning Richard's final manipulation into useless ash.

She stood there watching until there was absolutely nothing left but glowing embers.

She realized that true power wasn't fighting back against his words.

True power was denying him an audience entirely.

She turned off the fireplace, walked back into the kitchen, and poured herself a glass of water.

Her heart rate slowed back to a perfect, steady, and peaceful rhythm.

The ghost was officially banished.
