Chapter 5: The Hidden Motive

The drive to the hospital was quiet.

Too quiet.

Arthur sat in the passenger seat of the federal vehicle, staring out the window as the city passed by. The same streets he had driven countless times now looked different.

Every place held a memory.

The restaurant where Lily celebrated her college graduation.

The park where she learned to ride a bicycle.

The little coffee shop where she once told him she had met someone special.

Richard had entered their lives slowly.

Carefully.

He hadn't arrived looking like a threat.

He arrived wearing a perfect smile.

And that was what bothered Arthur the most.

The most dangerous people were rarely the ones who looked dangerous.

They were the ones who convinced everyone they were safe.

When Arthur arrived at the hospital, Lily was already awake.

Her face was bruised, but her eyes were clearer.

The moment she saw him, tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Arthur immediately sat beside her.

"No."

"But I should have told you."

"No," he repeated gently. "You should never have been put in a position where you were afraid to tell me."

Lily looked down.

For a moment, she was silent.

Then she finally spoke.

"Richard told me nobody would believe me."

Arthur didn't interrupt.

"He said everyone loved him. That he had money, friends, and connections. He said if I left, people would think I was crazy."

Her voice shook.

"And I started believing him."

Arthur reached for her hand.

"You were surviving."

Lily wiped her tears.

"There were signs, Dad. I saw them. I just kept making excuses."

Arthur looked at his daughter.

"What signs?"

She took a deep breath.

"He controlled everything. My bank account. My schedule. Who I talked to. Where I went."

She paused.

"Then things got worse."

The room became still.

"Three months ago, I found papers in his office."

"What kind of papers?"

"Documents about my inheritance."

Arthur frowned.

"My inheritance?"

Lily nodded.

"After Mom passed away, the money she left me was protected. Richard couldn't access it unless I signed certain documents."

Arthur remembered.

His late wife's trust.

The one thing he had promised to protect for Lily.

"He wanted your inheritance."

Lily looked away.

"I think that was always the reason."

The words hurt.

Not because they were surprising.

Because they confirmed the truth.

Richard hadn't loved Lily.

He had seen her as an opportunity.

A name.

A fortune.

A possession.

At that moment, Agent Harper entered the room.

"Arthur."

He stood.

"What did you find?"

The agent placed a folder on the table.

"We analyzed the documents recovered from Richard's office."

She opened it.

"The custody papers he showed you were fake."

Lily looked shocked.

"What?"

"They were designed to intimidate you. He wanted you to believe he had legal control over your life."

Arthur exhaled slowly.

Another lie.

Another weapon.

But Agent Harper wasn't finished.

"There is more."

She placed another document on the table.

"This is a transfer agreement."

Arthur studied it.

His expression changed.

"What is this?"

"Richard planned to move control of your inheritance into a private company."

Lily stared at the paper.

"His company?"

Agent Harper nodded.

"And the person helping him create the plan?"

She placed a photograph beside the document.

It was the woman from the recording.

Lily's closest friend.

Emily.

Lily covered her mouth.

"No..."

Arthur looked at her.

"Lily?"

She shook her head.

"Emily was the only person I trusted after I married Richard."

Agent Harper spoke carefully.

"We need to talk to her."

Lily looked terrified.

"She knows everything."

Arthur squeezed his daughter's hand.

"Then now she gets to answer for everything."

At that exact moment, Arthur's phone rang.

The number was unknown.

He answered.

A familiar voice spoke immediately.

"Arthur?"

His expression changed.

Because he recognized the voice.

It was the Chief of Police.

"Your daughter needs to leave town," the chief whispered.

Arthur stood up.

"Why?"

The chief hesitated.

Then came the words that changed the entire investigation.

"Because Richard isn't trying to protect himself anymore."

A pause.

"He's trying to make sure nobody survives the truth."
