Chapter 15 - The adrenaline that had sustained Arthur for a decade finally began to fade from his system.

For years, he had operated on a constant, hyper-vigilant state of terrifying high alert.

He had slept with his phone on his chest, waiting for the inevitable midnight emergency call.

He had spent countless hours consulting lawyers, tracking Richard's movements, and preparing for the worst.

Now that Richard was locked in a federal penitentiary, the war was officially over.

But the human body keeps a meticulous, unforgiving score of the battles it fights.

One Tuesday afternoon, Arthur collapsed while working in his garden.

Lily received the call from a neighbor and drove to the hospital in a state of absolute, blinding panic.

She sprinted through the emergency room doors, her mind flashing back to the darkest days of the past.

She found him sitting up in a hospital bed, looking pale but offering her a reassuring smile.

"I'm fine, Lily," Arthur promised, reaching out to hold her trembling hand.

The doctor walked in, reviewing a tablet filled with test results and heart monitors.

"It’s not a heart attack," the doctor explained gently.

"It’s severe, systemic exhaustion."

"Your father's cortisol levels are incredibly high, indicative of prolonged, extreme stress."

"His body is simply shutting down to force him to finally rest."

Lily sat in the chair beside the bed, burying her face in her hands.

She realized exactly how much of his own life Arthur had sacrificed to keep her alive.

He had absorbed the shockwaves of Richard's abuse so they wouldn't completely destroy her.

"I'm so sorry, Dad," Lily whispered, tears slipping through her fingers.

Arthur gently pulled her hands away from her face, looking at her with fierce, unwavering love.

"Never apologize for my duty as your father," Arthur said firmly.

"I would fight that monster a thousand times over to get you to where you are today."

"But the doctor is right," Arthur admitted, leaning back against the pillows with a heavy sigh.

"I am tired."

"Then it is my turn to take care of you," Lily said, her voice filled with absolute resolve.

When Arthur was discharged the next day, Lily brought him to her new house.

She cooked his meals, she managed his medications, and she forced him to sit in the sun and do nothing.
