Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

Arthur kept the phone against his ear, listening carefully.
The Chief of Police's voice was barely above a whisper.
"You need to understand something, Arthur. Richard has been preparing for this moment for a long time."
Arthur looked toward Agent Harper.
She immediately noticed his expression.
"Who is it?"
Arthur covered the phone slightly.
"The Chief."
Agent Harper's eyes narrowed.
"Put him on speaker."
Arthur hesitated for a second.
Then he did.
The chief took a breath.
"I know what this looks like. I know I was at Richard's house today. I know what people are going to think."
Arthur's voice was cold.
"They're going to think you protected him."
Silence.
Then the chief answered quietly.
"Because I did."
The room became still.
Even Agent Harper looked surprised.
The chief continued.
"I made mistakes. I ignored things I should have investigated. I convinced myself it wasn't my problem."
Arthur stared at the floor.
"And now?"
"Now I realize Richard was never afraid of consequences because he believed he controlled them."
Agent Harper stepped closer.
"Chief, this is Agent Harper. You are aware this call may be recorded?"
"I know."
"Then tell us everything."
The chief was silent for several seconds.
Finally, he spoke.
"Richard has been building influence for years. Donations. Political favors. Personal relationships. He didn't need to threaten everyone."
A pause.
"He made people feel like helping him was easier than standing against him."
Arthur looked at Lily.
She was listening carefully.
"Why are you telling us now?" Arthur asked.
The chief's voice changed.
Because of guilt.
"Because I saw your daughter today."
Silence.
"I saw her lying on that floor. And I realized I had become the kind of person I used to arrest."
Arthur didn't answer.
The chief continued.
"There is something you need to know about Emily."
Lily's face changed.
"What about her?"
The chief sighed.
"She wasn't just helping Richard."
Arthur looked at Agent Harper.
"What does that mean?"
"It means she was being paid."
Lily looked shocked.
"No..."
"Emily has received money from Richard's company for almost eighteen months."
Arthur felt his jaw tighten.
Another betrayal.
Another person who had stood close to Lily while helping destroy her.
Agent Harper immediately moved toward the door.
"We need to locate her."
But before anyone could move, Lily's phone—now repaired and placed beside her hospital bed—suddenly received a message.
Everyone froze.
Arthur picked it up.
The message was from Emily.
I know you found out. We need to talk before it's too late.
Below it was a location.
A quiet coffee shop across town.
Agent Harper looked at Arthur.
"This could be a trap."
Arthur nodded.
"I know."
"Then why go?"
Arthur looked at Lily.
Because this wasn't about revenge.
It was about answers.
"Because my daughter spent two years surrounded by people who lied to her."
He placed the phone down.
"And someone needs to finally tell her the truth."
Thirty minutes later, Arthur and Agent Harper watched from an unmarked vehicle outside the coffee shop.
Emily sat alone by the window.
She looked nervous.
Not confident.
Not like someone who had planned everything.
Like someone who knew she had gone too far.
Arthur entered first.
Emily immediately stood.
"Arthur..."
He stopped.
The woman who had hugged Lily at family gatherings.
The woman who had promised to protect her.
The woman who had called herself her best friend.
Now looked like a stranger.
"Why?" Arthur asked.
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know how far he would take it."
Arthur stared at her.
"You helped him."
"I know."
"You helped him hurt my daughter."
Emily looked down.
"I thought I was helping myself."
The answer made Arthur pause.
"What did Richard promise you?"
Emily swallowed.
"Money."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"But that wasn't the real reason."
Arthur waited.
Emily looked toward the window.
"Richard had something on me."
Agent Harper stepped inside.
"What kind of something?"
Emily's hands trembled.
"Proof that could ruin my life."
Arthur's expression hardened.
"So he controlled you too."
Emily nodded.
"He controls everyone."
She reached into her bag and placed a small flash drive on the table.
"I copied everything before he found out I was scared."
Agent Harper picked it up carefully.
"What is this?"
Emily looked at Arthur.
"The reason Richard isn't just afraid of losing money."
A pause.
"The reason he's afraid of going to prison."
Arthur stared at the flash drive.
"What is on it?"
Emily whispered:
"Records of every person he paid to protect him."
Outside the window, a black SUV slowly passed the coffee shop.
Emily's face changed instantly.
"He's here."
Arthur turned.
"What?"
Emily stood quickly.
"Richard knows I'm talking."
Agent Harper reached for her radio.
But before she could speak, Emily whispered the words that made everyone freeze.
"He didn't come for me."
May you like
She looked directly at Arthur.
"He came for Lily."
