Chapter 41 - The Foundation's Anniversary
Five years.
It had been exactly five years since Dr. Jenkins transplanted a healthy kidney into my failing body, giving me a second chance at life. And it had been five years since I walked out of that courtroom, leaving my abusers behind bars.
To celebrate the milestone, The Phoenix Initiative hosted a massive, elegant gala in the Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton. It wasn't just a celebration of my survival; it was a celebration of the hundreds of women we had successfully extracted from financial abuse over the past half-decade.
The ballroom was magnificent, filled with crystal chandeliers, towering floral arrangements, and the joyous, triumphant energy of survivors reclaiming their joy.
I wore a stunning, floor-length sapphire gown that highlighted the healthy, vibrant glow of my skin. I did not try to hide the faint, silvery scar on my abdomen; it was a badge of absolute honor.
Chloe, wearing a sharp, custom-tailored tuxedo, handed me a glass of champagne as we stood near the entrance, greeting guests.
"You clean up nice, partner," Chloe smirked, clinking her glass against mine.
"You don't look so bad yourself," I laughed.
Suddenly, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. I turned around and gasped. Standing before me was Dr. Jenkins, looking as sharp and composed as she had the day she saved my life.
"Dr. Jenkins!" I cried, pulling the brilliant surgeon into a tight hug. "I am so honored you came."
"I wouldn't have missed this for the world, Maya," Dr. Jenkins smiled warmly, stepping back to look at me. "When I see you now, I almost can't believe you are the same terrified girl I met in the dialysis ward. Your blood panels are perfect, but your spirit... your spirit is a miracle."

"No, Maya," she corrected gently. "I just fixed the engine. You are the one who steered the ship out of the storm."
