Chapter 16 - The Tape

The third day of the trial was the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The courtroom was packed to capacity. The air was thick with anticipation.

Ms. Alvarez stood before the judge. "Your Honor, the State calls Maya Lawson to the stand."

I stood up, squeezed Chloe's hand, and walked through the wooden gate. I took the oath, my voice clear and unwavering, and sat in the witness box.

I looked out at the courtroom. I saw the faces of the jury, the reporters, and finally, my parents. They looked small. Pathetic. Stripped of all their power.

Ms. Alvarez approached the podium. "Maya, I want to direct your attention to the events of June 14th. Can you tell the jury why you placed a hidden camera in the study of your home?"

"I suspected my family was stealing from me," I answered calmly. "I needed proof before confronting them."

"And did you find that proof?"

"I found much more than that."

Ms. Alvarez turned to the judge. "Your Honor, the State would like to introduce Exhibit A. The hidden camera footage recovered from the Oak Brook residence."

The lights in the courtroom dimmed. The large screens positioned around the room flickered to life.

The grainy footage showed the study. Evelyn and Richard walked into the frame.

The audio was crystal clear.

Evelyn's sharp, cruel voice echoed through the silent courtroom.

"The doctor says she has maybe a few weeks if the dialysis fails. We need the house fully transferred into my name by Friday. If she dies while her name is still on the deed, the probate court will freeze the asset, and the creditors will take everything to pay those ridiculous medical bills."

The jury watched in stunned silence as Richard hesitated on the screen.

"Evelyn, if we force her to sign this while she's heavily medicated... it's fraud. If she finds out, she’ll ruin us."

Evelyn's horrific, chilling response played next.

"She’s not going to find out, Richard. She’s going to die. And when she does, I want to make sure we aren’t left with nothing but a corpse and a mountain of debt. Hand me the pen. I’ll forge the signature myself."

The video ended. The lights came back on.

The silence in the courtroom was absolute. It was a heavy, suffocating silence of pure shock. One of the jurors, a middle-aged woman, was holding her hand over her mouth, tears in her eyes.

I looked down at Evelyn. She was staring at her lap, her face pale, completely broken. The mask was gone. The monster was finally exposed.
