Chapter 27 - The Golden Cage

Eleanor Vance arrived at our office precisely at ten o'clock on Tuesday morning. Chloe personally escorted her through our private, secure elevator to avoid the main lobby. Eleanor was a beautiful woman in her late thirties, but she was entirely consumed by a nervous, frantic energy. She wore a high-necked silk blouse, despite the warm summer weather, and she clutched a designer handbag like it was the only thing keeping her tethered to the earth.

I stood up and walked around my desk, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "Eleanor, my name is Maya. Please, sit down. You are completely safe here. The windows are soundproof, the networks are encrypted, and no one knows you are in this building."

She sank into the plush armchair, her hands trembling violently. "You don't know Victor," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "He is everywhere. He has microphones in the house. He has GPS trackers in my jewelry. If he finds out I came here..."

"He won't," Chloe interrupted smoothly, handing Eleanor a cup of herbal tea. "Our security team jammed the signal on your tracking bracelet the moment you stepped into our transport vehicle. As far as Victor's servers are concerned, you are currently sitting in the waiting room of your physical therapist."

Eleanor took a shaky breath, wrapping her hands around the warm mug. "He has taken everything. Before we got married, I had a successful career and a significant trust fund from my grandfather. Victor convinced me to merge our assets for a 'business venture.' Now, I don't even have a debit card. If I want to buy a coffee, I have to submit a request through his assistant. He told me that if I ever try to leave, he will freeze me out entirely and take my children."

I leaned against the edge of my desk, looking directly into her eyes. "Eleanor, I understand exactly what you are feeling. I know the terror of realizing that the person who is supposed to love you is actually treating you like a hostile acquisition. They use money to make you feel helpless, to convince you that survival without them is impossible."

"Is it?" she asked, a tear slipping down her bruised cheek. "Is it possible to beat him?"

"Victor built a financial cage," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "But every cage has a lock, and every lock has a key. I am a forensic accountant, Eleanor. I specialize in breaking locks. We are going to find your money, we are going to freeze his assets, and we are going to give you your life back."
