Chapter 20 - The Trust

With the criminal trials over and the perpetrators behind bars, it was time to address the financial wreckage left in their wake.

Arthur arranged a meeting at his downtown law firm. The massive conference room overlooked the Chicago River, a stark contrast to the sterile deposition room where I had faced my parents.

"The forensic accounting is complete, Maya," Arthur said, sliding a thick, leather-bound portfolio across the table.

I opened it. The numbers printed on the summary page were staggering.

"When Chloe moved your assets into the blind trust before the surgery, she secured the bulk of your liquid savings," Arthur explained. "But we have also successfully sued Connor for the assets he purchased using your forged credit lines. We seized his luxury vehicles, his designer watches, and liquidated his cryptocurrency accounts."

I let out a harsh breath. "So he really has nothing left."

"Less than nothing," Arthur nodded. "He is currently living in a studio apartment in a terrible neighborhood, facing insurmountable civil judgments. He will be paying off the debts he owes you for the rest of his natural life."

I looked at the final balance in the trust. It was more money than I could spend in a lifetime, especially now that I wasn't funding a family of parasites.

"What do you want to do with it, Maya?" Chloe asked softly, sitting beside me. "You can travel. You can buy an island. You can do literally whatever you want."

I looked out the window at the bustling city below.

I had spent my entire life working myself to the bone, grinding away in corporate offices to make money that I never got to enjoy. Money had been a weapon used against me. It had been the reason my family wanted me dead.

But now, it was a tool.

"I don't want an island," I said, a clear, definitive plan forming in my mind. "I want to build something. Something that helps people who are trapped exactly where I was."

Arthur leaned back in his chair, a smile spreading across his face. "I know some incredible charity organizers. What did you have in mind?"

May you like

"A foundation," I said confidently. "For victims of familial financial abuse and medical extortion. We provide free legal counsel, forensic accountants, and safe housing for people who are being exploited by the people who are supposed to love them."

Chloe's eyes filled with tears, and she reached out to squeeze my hand. "It's perfect, Maya. It's absolutely perfect."
