Chapter 13 - Connor's Humiliation

While Evelyn and Richard awaited trial, Connor’s life continued to unravel in the most public, spectacular way imaginable.
He had built his entire identity around the illusion of being a self-made, ultra-successful lifestyle influencer. He posted daily videos from the Oak Brook house, claiming he bought it with his "hustle," while posing next to sports cars leased with my credit cards.
The internet, however, is a ruthless detective.
Once the news broke about the criminal charges against our parents, investigative journalists and internet sleuths dug into Connor's finances. It didn't take long for them to discover that Connor's "brand" was entirely built on a foundation of stolen money and profound fraud.
One evening, Chloe and I were sitting in the penthouse watching a true-crime documentary when Chloe’s phone started blowing up with notifications.
"Maya, you have to see this," Chloe gasped, quickly casting a video from her phone to the massive flat-screen television on the wall.
It was a viral TikTok video with over ten million views.
The video was taken inside the Cicero fast-food restaurant where Connor had been forced to take a minimum-wage job to pay his legal fees. He was wearing a paper hat and a grease-stained uniform, standing behind the cash register.
A customer was filming him. "Hey," the customer said mockingly. "Aren't you that billionaire crypto-bro from Instagram? The guy who said poor people just need to 'grind harder'? Let me get a large fry, Mr. CEO."
Connor lost his mind.
On camera, he screamed, threw a plastic tray at the customer, and went on a horrific, unhinged rant about how he was the victim of a massive conspiracy, how his family ruined his life, and how he deserved to be rich.
The video ended with Connor being physically dragged out of the restaurant by the manager, fired on the spot.
The comments were absolutely brutal. Thousands of people mocked his entitlement, cheering for his downfall. He had become a global laughingstock.
"He really thought he was untouchable," Chloe said, shaking her head in disbelief.

I watched the video loop again, watching the arrogant brother who used to mock my illness completely break down over a minimum-wage job.
"He built his castle on sand," I said quietly. "The tide just finally came in."
