Chapter 29 - The Trojan Horse

Saturday evening arrived with a suffocating tension that settled over The Phoenix Initiative office. Chloe, Arthur, and I were gathered in the secure communications room. The massive wall monitors displayed the live feed from a microscopic camera hidden inside the diamond brooch Eleanor was wearing to the gala. Through the feed, we could see the opulent, crowded ballroom of Victor Vance’s Hamptons estate, filled with billionaires, politicians, and socialites.
Chloe was on the headset, speaking directly into a microscopic earpiece hidden in Eleanor’s ear. "Okay, Eleanor, you are doing beautifully. Keep smiling. Victor is currently speaking with the governor near the ice sculpture. You have a five-minute window to move."
Through the camera feed, we saw Eleanor excuse herself from a group of wealthy wives, citing a need to use the restroom. Her breathing was slightly elevated, the sound transmitting clearly to our control room.
"I'm in the east hallway," Eleanor whispered softly, her voice trembling. "The server room is at the end of the corridor. There is a guard."
I leaned closer to the microphone. "Don't panic, Eleanor. Just breathe. Chloe, execute the distraction protocol."
Chloe’s fingers flew across her keyboard. "Triggering a localized power surge in the catering kitchen. Now."
Seconds later, a loud, muffled pop echoed through the audio feed, followed by the sound of shouting from the kitchen area. The guard standing in front of the server room hesitated, then jogged toward the kitchen to investigate the disturbance.
"The door is clear, Eleanor. Move," I commanded.
Eleanor rushed forward, swiping a stolen keycard Victor kept in his study. The heavy door clicked open. The server room was dark, illuminated only by the blinking blue and green lights of the massive data racks.
"Plug the drive into the primary port on the central rack," Chloe instructed.
We watched as Eleanor’s trembling hand reached out, inserting the small, specialized USB drive. A progress bar instantly appeared on Chloe's monitor.
"Uploading payload," Chloe said, her eyes locked on the screen. "Twenty percent... fifty percent... we are mirroring his shadow ledger... ninety percent... complete. Pull it out, Eleanor!"
May you like
Eleanor snatched the drive and rushed out of the room, just seconds before the guard returned to his post. She blended back into the party, completely undetected.
I looked at Chloe's monitor. Millions of encrypted files were now downloading into our secure servers. Victor's impenetrable fortress had just been breached.
