Chapter 9 - The Accountant’s Glitch

|

Victor had communicated with Paulo using an encrypted messaging application, but Paulo had inadvertently left an automatic cloud backup feature enabled on the device.

Joseph’s technical expert extracted a pristine, read-only duplicate of the device's entire memory drive in Paulo’s presence, carefully logging the hardware serial numbers, time signatures, and digital file signatures. Teresa Vitale’s forensic accounting team cross-referenced the digital timestamps with the Northstar bank transfers, establishing an ironclad paper trail of Victor’s extortion demands and Paulo’s responses.

However, the digital trail alone was insufficient to dismantle Victor’s standing among the allied families.

Then we discovered the audio file.

Hidden within an archived chat folder was a forty-second voice memo sent by Victor during a late-night drinking session. His voice was slurred, arrogant, and vicious. He openly mocked the concept of family loyalty, boasting that his elderly uncle, Anton Kresnik—the respected former head of their syndicate—had believed in loyalty right up until his heart medication was tampered with at Victor’s dinner table. In the background of the recording, another operative asked whether the Toronto syndicate elders suspected anything. Victor laughed ruthlessly, naming the offshore shell account used to pay off the doctor who altered the prescription.

The account number matched a wire transfer logged in the phone’s backup files.

“He assassinated the legendary leader of his own bloodline,” Joseph breathed, his eyes wide with shock.

Alexander replayed the voice memo, his expression darkening. “In Victor’s underworld culture, murdering your own family patriarch to seize power isn't considered strategy. It is an unforgivable sin.”

“Can we legally authenticate the recording?” I asked Teresa over a encrypted video line.

“Voice frequencies, banking receipts, original hardware logs, and Paulo’s sworn testimony,” Teresa confirmed. “It is more than enough for Victor’s own governing council to execute him for treason. Though it would never hold up in a traditional court of law.”

“We aren't building a legal prosecution,” I asserted. “We are stripping away the loyalty of the men who obey his orders.”

Alexander looked at me with profound pride. “Precisely.”

We finally possessed the leverage to destroy Victor Kresnik without firing a single bullet.

Yet we still lacked the unified support of the allied families to execute the plan.

Tragedy struck the following morning. Victor’s enforcers murdered the missing sixteen-year-old relative, abandoning his body near a shipping pier in Brooklyn. The horrific crime fractured the Pellegrini alliance into three conflicting factions. One faction demanded immediate, bloody retaliation in the streets. A second faction advocated surrendering portion of the port routes to appease Victor. Teresa Vitale advocated for an economic embargo, though she conceded it would take months to bear fruit.

To prevent total collapse, an emergency summit was convened in Atlantic City—neutral territory owned by an independent syndicate.

“I am attending the summit,” I informed Alexander as he packed his briefcase.

“No,” he replied instantly.

“Explain your reasoning, Alexander.”

“Victor knows your importance to me,” he argued, his eyes filled with anxiety. “His assassins could target the hotel.”

“He already knows my residential address, my workplace, and my daily routine,” I countered fiercely. “Hiding me in a penthouse only proves to the alliance that I am a vulnerability you can be manipulated through!”

“That does not justify placing you in a room filled with armed mobsters!”

“I am attending as Teresa Vitale’s strategic consultant,” I stated, holding my ground. “I constructed the timeline that uncovered Paulo’s breach, and I understand every piece of digital evidence. If the alliance is going to vote on this strategy, I have an absolute right to present the facts.”

His jaw set in a rigid line, but his possessive instinct no longer held total authority over my decisions.

“Separate transportation,” he dictated sternly. “Separate hotel suite. Protected by Teresa’s security team.”

“Agreed.”

“If her security detail orders an emergency evacuation, you leave immediately.”

“Agreed.”

“I despise this arrangement, Gabriella.”

“My safety protocol wasn't up for your approval, Alexander.”

He shot me a look so intense I had to suppress a laugh.
