Chapter 18 - The Safehouse Stand

|

Mark’s mercenaries opened fire instantly.

Alexander returned fire through the shattered windshield, disabling two shooters while using the engine block as tactical cover.

“We need to fall back into the treeline!” I yelled over the deafening gunfire, pulling my small concealed firearm from my purse.

“Go! I'll cover you!” Alexander shouted, firing three rapid shots that forced Mark behind his SUV.

Together, we bolted from the vehicle, sprinting into the dense, fog-shrouded coastal forest as bullets tore through the trees around us.

The thick fog offered temporary concealment, but Mark’s tactical team moved with professional military precision, fanning out through the woods to flank our position.

We reached a steep rocky ridge overlooking the crashing ocean below. We were completely trapped.

“I have four rounds left,” Alexander breathed, checking his magazine, his face pale with adrenaline.

“I have three,” I replied, gripping my small handgun firmly.

Through the heavy fog, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed off the wet rocks. Mark Kresnik stepped into the small clearing, his rifle raised, a cruel smile spreading across his face.

“End of the line, Pellegrini,” Mark sneered, raising his weapon to target Alexander’s chest. “Your empire dies with you.”

Before Mark could pull the trigger, I stepped out from behind the rock, aiming my firearm directly at his throat.

“Drop the weapon, Mark!” I commanded, my voice cold and steady.

Mark turned his head, laughing mockingly. “You think a little corporate assistant is going to shoot me?”

May you like

“I am not his assistant,” I said softly. “I am his partner.”
