Chapter 20 - The Unwritten Horizon

|

Six months later.

The sun shone brightly over a cliffside garden overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Southern Italy.

White silk ribbons fluttered in the warm ocean breeze, and string quartet music drifted across the pristine lawn. Our closest friends and allies were gathered—Teresa Vitale, Joseph Ferraro, Paulo Ricci and his healthy daughter Elena, and the trusted team who had stood by us through the storm.

I stood before an archway of white roses, wearing a breathtaking lace wedding gown.

Alexander stood across from me, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. His dark eyes were filled with tears of pure happiness as he took my hands in his.

The magistrate smiled at us both. “Do you, Alexander Pellegrini, take Gabriella Mitchell to be your lawfully wedded wife, to stand beside her as her partner, her equal, and her love, through all the days of your life?”

Alexander looked into my eyes, his voice steady and filled with devotion. “I do. With all my heart.”

“And do you, Gabriella Mitchell, take Alexander Pellegrini to be your lawfully wedded husband, to choose him freely, to stand beside him as his equal, and to share your life together?”

I smiled, my heart overflowing. “I do.”

“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the magistrate declared. “You may kiss your bride.”

Alexander pulled me into his arms and kissed me deeply, as our loved ones erupted into joyous applause.

Later that evening, after the celebration had wound down, Alexander and I walked hand in hand along the private beach below the estate. The calm waves lapped gently against the shore, and the night sky was filled with brilliant stars.

We sat together on a wooden bench overlooking the water, wrapped in a warm blanket, sipping champagne.

“No fear,” Alexander whispered softly, resting his forehead against mine.

“No cages,” I replied, touching his face. “Only us.”

He pulled a small, silver key from his pocket and handed it to me.

“What is this?” I asked, curious.

“The key to our new home in Tuscany,” he smiled warmly. “No guards. No security passes. Just a house built for two.”

I smiled, leaning against his chest as we watched the moonlight dance across the calm ocean waves. We had survived the dark world of shadows, blackmail, and fear. We had earned our freedom, our love, and our future.

Suddenly, deep inside Alexander’s jacket, his secure private phone emitted a soft, quiet chime.

It was an encrypted message from an unknown international number.

Alexander froze for a split second, looking down at his pocket. Then he looked at me, offering a gentle, questioning smile.

I reached over, gently placed my hand over his pocket, and smiled back.

We didn't open the message.

Instead, we turned back toward the dark ocean, letting the phone chime fade into the sound of the rising tide, holding each other tight as an unwritten horizon waited silently in the dark.
