Chapter 15 - The Ninety-Day Freeze

That evening, we prepared dinner together in my modest kitchen.
Alexander was terrible at slicing vegetables, his precise, commanding hands awkward around a simple paring knife, but he refused to give up. We laughed, drank Italian red wine, and enjoyed the delicious simplicity of being ordinary people in love.
There were no encrypted phones ringing on the counter. There were no armed sentries guarding the hallway.
There was only us.
After dinner, we sat together on the sofa, watching the city lights twinkle through the windows. Alexander held me close, his arm wrapped comfortably around my shoulders, his chin resting against my hair.
“Teresa informed me today that your strategic consulting firm officially received its business license,” he noted proudly.
“Yes,” I smiled, leaning against his chest. “My first major corporate client is the Pellegrini Shipping Enterprise.”
He chuckled softly. “And what are your consultation fees, Miss Mitchell?”
“Extremely high,” I teased, looking up at his handsome face. “And completely non-negotiable.”
He leaned down and kissed me deeply, his hands gently holding my waist. The passion between us burned brighter than ever, fueled not by danger or forced proximity, but by mutual respect and absolute equality.
Later that night, as we lay tangled in the soft sheets of my bed, listening to the quiet hum of the city, Alexander looked at me with profound peace in his eyes.
“I love you, Gabriella,” he whispered into the darkness.
“I love you too, Alexander,” I replied, tracing the strong line of his jaw.
For the first time since I had met him, the ghost of his past was finally gone. He wasn't holding me to prevent another tragedy. He was holding me because he loved the woman I was.

We fell asleep wrapped in each other's arms, secure in the world we had fought so hard to build together.
