Chapter 10 - The Warehouse Bait

|
The emergency dinner was held in an opulent private dining hall in Atlantic City, beneath crystal chandeliers that felt entirely out of place for the deadly conversation taking place.
Twelve powerful syndicate leaders gathered around a long mahogany table. Teresa Vitale sat at the head of the table. Alexander sat halfway down, flanked by Joseph. I took my seat directly beside Teresa, maintaining my independent status.
One of the older syndicate bosses glared at me dismissively. “We are here to coordinate a war, Teresa, not review administrative calendars.”
Teresa cut her steak with terrifying precision. “Then you should thank God someone brought a mind capable of organizing your messy affairs, Marco.”
The confrontation exploded before the first course was finished.
Men who had operated as allies for decades began shouting, accusing one another of cowardice, hidden ambition, and exploiting a murdered child to settle personal territory disputes. Every screamed insult pushed them further away from confronting Victor Kresnik. I watched Alexander attempt to assert dominance through intimidating authority, but his aggression only provoked further resistance from his rivals.
I placed my water glass onto the table with a soft clink.
The quiet sound went unnoticed in the chaos. But my opening sentence stopped the room cold.
“Victor Kresnik doesn't need to defeat this alliance,” I said, my voice cutting through the noise, “because you gentlemen are fully prepared to destroy each other for free.”
The old boss, Marco, rounded on me. “What did you just say to me?”
“You are squabbling over future profit splits after Victor is gone,” I said, leaning forward. “He is not gone. He brutally murdered a child because he calculated that your emotional chaos would make you weak, disorganized, and easy to conquer. Looking around this table, his calculation was entirely correct.”
Silence descended over the room.
I distributed a clean, one-page strategic timeline across the table. It contained no mention of the voice memo or bank accounts—only a stark, factual breakdown of coordinated port attacks, financial losses, and the exact moments internal infighting had erupted within forty-eight hours of each event.
“Every single time your families turned on each other, Victor seized another trade route,” I explained clearly. “Unite behind one single objective tonight: dismantle his authority. Freeze all territorial boundaries for ninety days. Centralize all intelligence operations under Teresa’s command. Once Victor is removed, you may return to your petty arguments with a clear record of who actually contributed to the victory.”
Teresa leaned back, a cold smile touching her lips. “A ninety-day boundary freeze.”
Alexander looked down at the strategic timeline, then met the eyes of every boss in the room. “No expanding territories. No backdoor deals with the enemy. Anyone who violates the freeze loses all access to the commercial shipping ports permanently.”
The proposal offered something far more reliable than trust: a binding, enforceable contract.
By the time dessert arrived, every single leader had signed the agreement.
After the dinner concluded, Alexander caught up to me in the quiet hotel corridor outside my room.
“You achieved what my authority could not,” he admitted softly.
“I articulated the reality they couldn't hear from you,” I replied, “because they were too busy feeling threatened by your power.”
“That isn't a modest assessment.”
“It is an accurate one.”
A rare, beautiful smile illuminated his tired face. “You were magnificent tonight, Gabriella.”
He reached out his hand, then paused, honoring my boundaries.
I took a step closer to him.
“I am standing here because I chose to attend this meeting,” I reminded him gently. “I have my own room, my own security detail, and a vehicle waiting for me tomorrow whether you approve of it or not.”
“I am fully aware of those facts.”
“Then ask me properly, Alexander.”
He looked deep into my eyes. “Do you want to be with me tonight, Gabriella?”
“Yes.”
This time, when he kissed me, there were no locked doors holding me captive, no corporate paycheck tethering me to his commands, and no possessive orders disguised as love.

I unlocked the hotel door and brought him inside.
