Chapter 17 - High-Speed Ambush

He slipped the diamond ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into a passionate kiss, spinning me around in his arms as the candlelight flickered around us.

We celebrated late into the night, making plans for a simple, beautiful wedding far away from the dangerous world of syndicate politics.

However, in the shadowy underworld we navigated, true peace is rarely granted without one final test.

Six weeks before our scheduled wedding date, Alexander and I traveled to a secluded coastal estate in Maine to finalize the purchase of our dream home—a private retreat where we could escape the city.

We drove down a winding, forested coastal highway in Alexander’s vintage sports car, the ocean roaring against the cliffs far below.

Suddenly, a heavy commercial truck pulled out from a side road, completely blocking both lanes of the narrow highway ahead.

Alexander slammed on the brakes, the tires screaming as the car skidded to a halt yards from the truck's steel bumper.

Before we could reverse, two black SUVs slammed into the road behind us, boxing us in completely.

“Stay low!” Alexander shouted, drawing his sidearm from beneath his jacket.

Six heavily armed men in tactical gear emerged from the vehicles, weapons raised. But they weren't wearing the insignia of any local syndicate.

A tall, weathered man stepped out from the lead SUV, holding an automatic rifle.

I recognized his face immediately from international security dossiers: Viktor Kresnik’s older brother, Mark Kresnik—a ruthless mercenary leader who had been operating in Eastern Europe for a decade.

“Pellegrini!” Mark thundered across the silent highway. “You destroyed my brother! You handed his empire to the alliance council! Today, you pay the ultimate blood price!”
