Chapter 5 - Sunrise in Boston

|

Now, sitting at the dining table of his penthouse, those sacred private moments were laid bare, mixed in with terrifying surveillance shots of my apartment, my local coffee shop, and the office garage.

The translated Albanian note contained no financial demands—only a chilling promise that Victor Kresnik would contact Alexander soon to dictate his terms.

I arranged the photographs in precise chronological order across the marble table.

Alexander stood across from me, watching. “What are you doing, Gabriella?”

“My job,” I answered coldly.

“This isn't calendar management.”

“Every single photo represents a calendar event,” I pointed out, tapping the red date stamps. “September, October, November. They knew the exact minute I left my building, when I arrived at work, and when we boarded our flight to Boston. Either Victor has a massive team of thirty men watching me around the clock—which Joseph insists he doesn't have—or someone inside your inner circle is feeding them my precise itinerary.”

Alexander moved closer, his eyes scanning the layout.

“Look at this photograph,” I insisted, pointing to an image of me crossing a street. “This was taken right after our Tokyo meeting was rescheduled from ten to eleven-thirty. That schedule change happened less than two hours before the meeting. Only six people had access to that updated calendar entry.”

“You, me, Joseph, the liaison, building security, and corporate accounting,” Alexander listed instantly.

“Why accounting?”

“Car service charges are logged automatically to meeting codes.”

I tapped the photograph taken on the Boston roof. “And who booked the hotel rooms?”

“The exact same group, excluding building security.”

“Then the threat against my life didn't start with our kiss in Boston,” I concluded, looking up into his dark eyes. “The kiss simply confirmed to Victor’s team that my schedule data was valuable leverage against you.”

Alexander pulled out his phone.

“Who are you calling?” I asked.

“Joseph. I want accounting completely locked down and interrogated.”

“Do it discreetly!” I warned. “If the mole sees you lock down the department, we lose our only opportunity to figure out what Victor is really planning.”

His hand froze mid-dial.

“You want me to leave the traitor in place?” he asked in disbelief.

“Only long enough to identify who it is and what kind of pressure Victor is applying to them,” I reasoned. “Not every leak stems from hatred. Some come from blackmail.”

Alexander stared at me across the table. For the first time since the envelope arrived, the blinding terror in his eyes faded, replaced by cold, strategic brilliance.

“You’re entirely right,” he conceded softly.

I gathered the photographs back into a neat stack. The envelope had been handled by multiple people, destroying any chance of clean fingerprints, but the dates and locations provided a clear trail. It proved we had an active security breach.

That discovery would change everything.

By midnight, Alexander had honored his word. I possessed a new security pass, a signed temporary housing contract guaranteeing my privacy, and a new direct reporting line to Teresa Vitale—the formidable female syndicate boss I trusted most to run her enterprise without demanding blind submission. Alexander had initiated the arrangement himself.

“You asked another major alliance leader to oversee your assistant?” I asked after he ended the call.

“Strategic consultant,” he corrected smoothly. “Effective tomorrow morning. An independent contract. You will no longer manage my personal schedule, and I will no longer control your financial livelihood.”

It was far more independence than I had demanded.

“Why Teresa Vitale?”

“Because she thoroughly enjoys telling me when I am wrong,” he admitted with a faint smile.

“That is the most reassuring thing you’ve said all day, Alexander.”

He almost smiled. Then his eyes drifted toward the dark hallway leading to the bedrooms.

“The key is inside your door,” he said softly. “Two armed guards are stationed outside the penthouse door. They report to Joseph, but your explicit rules regarding my entry are written directly into their standing orders.”

“Where will you be sleeping?”

“In the study on the leather sofa.”

“Are you playing the gentleman?”

“You are residing here under active threat,” he stated firmly. “I refuse to use forced proximity to coerce you into intimacy.”

I believed his sincerity. Yet I was still furious about the situation.

Both emotions burned inside me simultaneously.
