Chapter 14 - The Neutral Table

|

Two weeks later, the shadows that had blanketed the city had finally lifted.

With Victor’s faction dismantled and his former lieutenants locked in internal power struggles, peace returned to the commercial shipping ports. The ninety-day boundary freeze proposed in Atlantic City was officially codified into a permanent treaty, managed under Teresa Vitale’s firm oversight.

I had returned to my original apartment in the city, which had been swept for security devices, re-keyed, and fully restored to my complete control.

It was a crisp Saturday afternoon. I sat on my sunlit fire escape, sipping tea and painting the cityscape on a fresh canvas.

Down on the street below, a sleek charcoal sedan pulled up to the curb.

Alexander stepped out, wearing a casual cashmere sweater and dark trousers, holding a bouquet of fresh white peonies—my favorite flowers. He looked up toward the fire escape, a genuine, relaxed smile gracing his handsome face.

He didn't bring an entourage of guards. He didn't order his men to secure the street.

He walked up the front steps alone and knocked politely on my apartment door.

I opened the door, leaning against the frame with a faint smile. “Mr. Pellegrini.”

“Miss Mitchell,” he replied softly, offering the flowers. “May I come in?”

“Did you bring any security contracts for me to sign?” I teased, taking the peonies.

He let out a rich laugh, stepping inside my bright, cozy apartment. “I brought only myself.”

He looked around my space, appreciating the art supplies, the colorful rugs, and the absolute freedom that filled the air. He walked over to my easel, examining the painting I was working on.

“It’s beautiful,” he said sincerely.

“It’s mine,” I replied, putting the flowers in a glass vase. “And I chose to invite you into it.”

Alexander turned to face me, his dark eyes filled with deep emotional clarity.

“I learned something invaluable through this nightmare, Gabriella,” he confessed softly, walking over to stand before me.

“Tell me.”

“I learned that protecting someone by stripping away their voice isn't protection at all,” he admitted, reaching out to gently touch my cheek. “It is simply fear taking hostages. Real strength lies in standing beside a partner who has the absolute freedom to choose you every single day.”

My heart swelled with deep love for the man standing before me.

“You changed, Alexander,” I whispered, leaning into his warm touch.

May you like

“Because you refused to let me stay the same,” he replied, closing his eyes as he pressed his lips gently against mine.
