Chapter 7 - The Hidden Wire

By the morning of the third day, the trap was fully set.
Judge Miller of the County Superior Court had reviewed my audio file, the surgeon’s medical report, and the photograph of the bloody coal chute. He had privately signed an emergency felony arrest warrant for Derek Vance and Brenda Vance, along with a comprehensive search warrant for their residence.
However, Evelyn wanted more than just a search warrant. She wanted an undeniable, on-camera confession of their intent to abuse and defraud me.
“Derek’s investigator managed to track down where you were admitted an hour ago,” Evelyn informed me, standing near the window of my private room. “They bribed an orderly for your room number. They think they’ve caught you off guard.”
“They’re coming here?” I asked, my heart giving a slight thump, not from fear, but from cold anticipation.
“They are on their way up in the elevator right now,” Evelyn nodded, stepping over to the small, concealed door that led to the private bathroom in my suite. “They think you’re defenseless, broken, and alone.”
Evelyn reached into her leather bag and adjusted a tiny, high-definition camera concealed inside a box of tissues sitting on my nightstand. She also activated a remote microphone hidden beneath my hospital gown.
“I’ll be right behind this two-way mirror in the adjacent observation nook with Detective Vance from the Special Victims Unit,” Evelyn whispered, squeezing my hand gently. “Let them talk, Abigail. Let them say every cruel, arrogant thing they’ve been holding in. Give them all the rope they need to hang themselves.”

I pulled my blanket up to my waist, leaned back against the propped-up pillows, and forced my face to assume an expression of pale, helpless exhaustion.
Five seconds later, heavy footsteps echoed down the tiled hallway outside my door.
