Chapter 19 - The Trial’s Shocking Revelation

Three months later, the preliminary trial hearing convened in a packed county courtroom.
Derek and Brenda sat at the defense table dressed in bright orange county jail jumpsuits, their hands chained to their waists. Derek looked hollowed out—he had lost thirty pounds, his hair was thinning, and he refused to look at the gallery where reporters sat taking notes.
My lead prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Marcus Cole, called his first key witness to the stand: the lead forensic investigator who had cracked Derek’s secondary laptop.
“Investigator,” ADA Cole began, pointing to a projected document on the courtroom screen. “Did you uncover anything else on the defendant’s encrypted drive besides financial fraud?”
“Yes, sir,” the investigator testified, adjusting his glasses. “We uncovered an archived folder containing encrypted email communications between Derek Vance and an offshore corporate entity registered in the Cayman Islands.”
A sudden hush fell over the courtroom. I leaned forward in my seat, catching Evelyn’s eye.
“And what was the nature of these communications?” ADA Cole asked.
“The defendant was receiving monthly payments totaling over fifty thousand dollars,” the investigator revealed, “in exchange for providing corporate intelligence on his wife’s employer, as well as installing keylogger software on her private work laptop.”
My heart stopped in my chest.
