Chapter 10 - The Unmasking

|

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Derek and Brenda stood over my bed like twin vultures, completely convinced that they had crushed my spirit, cornered me, and forced me into absolute submission.

I looked down at the affidavit in my lap, then up at Derek’s smug, handsome face.

Slowly, deliberately, the fearful expression on my face vanished. I sat up straight against my pillows, pulled the hospital blanket down, and looked at them with an icy, calm composure that made Derek’s smile flicker.

“You’re right about one thing, Derek,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing like a steel bell through the quiet room. “I don't have my phone.”

I reached under my pillow and pulled out a sleek, black digital recording hub connected directly to the hospital’s high-speed fiber network. A bright red light was blinking rhythmically on its front panel.

“But I do have this,” I continued, holding it up so they could both see it clearly. “And every single word you just said—about breaking my leg, about forcing me to sign fraudulent documents, and about committing me to a mental institution—was broadcast live to the Special Victims Unit.”

Brenda’s mouth dropped open. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like she was about to faint.

Derek’s eyes snapped wide with sudden, explosive rage.

“You little bitch!” Derek screamed, lunging across the bed to grab the device from my hand. “Give me that!”

Before his hands could touch me, the heavy bathroom door clicked open behind him.

“Step back from the bed, Mr. Vance!” a stern, authoritative voice roared.

Detective Vance stepped into the room, his service weapon drawn and pointed directly at Derek’s chest, followed closely by my lawyer, Evelyn Reed, who was holding a legal folder and smiling triumphantly.
