Chapter 17 - The Public Exposure

|

The story of my escape and the subsequent exposure of Derek’s abusive family became a national news sensation over the weekend.

Front-page headlines splashed across regional newspapers: CORPORATE EXEC ARRESTED AFTER WIFE ESCAPES BROKEN-LEG IMPRISONMENT.

Social media erupted with overwhelming support for me. Thousands of women shared the story, praising my resourcefulness in using the rusted bottle opener to unscrew the coal chute grate and recording the hospital confrontation.

Meanwhile, Brenda’s pristine reputation in her high-society country club was utterly obliterated.

Members of her garden committee publicly distanced themselves, and several former friends came forward with stories of how Brenda had boasted about “disciplining” her daughter-in-law in private phone conversations.

My former corporate employers stepped up as well, offering me full paid administrative leave for as long as I needed to recover, along with a promotion to Senior Vice President of Brand Strategy once I was ready to return.

On Monday morning, Dr. Lin came into my room with a team of physical therapists.

“Well, Abigail,” Dr. Lin said, checking my incision sites with a bright smile. “The swelling has gone down dramatically, and your X-rays show the titanium rod is holding perfectly. You’re ready to start learning how to walk with crutches.”

I looked at the light oak crutches resting against the wall.

They weren't a symbol of weakness. They were my wings.
