Chapter 13 - Evidence Behind the Walls

The search didn't stop in the kitchen.
Armed with a broad warrant authorizing the seizure of all digital storage devices, financial documents, and surveillance equipment, federal and local investigators moved into Derek’s home office upstairs.
What they found inside his locked desk drawer escalated the case from domestic violence into a massive federal fraud investigation.
hidden behind a false back in Derek’s safe was a secondary laptop and three encrypted hard drives. When forensic IT specialists bypassed the basic security, they uncovered hundreds of recorded video files.
Derek had secretly installed hidden pinhole cameras inside every room of our house—including the bathrooms and my personal home office—monitoring my every move, recording my phone calls, and tracking my keystrokes for over two years.
Even more damning were the financial folders.
Derek had been systematically forging my signature on loan applications, transferring funds from my late mother’s trust account into an offshore account registered under his mother’s maiden name.
He had already drained over two hundred thousand dollars from my inheritance to cover his own massive personal gambling debts and failed stock investments.

When Sergeant Torres reviewed the evidence on the scene, she immediately picked up her radio and called the detective stationed at my hospital room.
“Vance, this isn't just an assault case,” Sergeant Torres said through the radio. “We’ve got felony spousal wiretapping, grand larceny, and corporate fraud. We’re impounding his cars and freezing all associated bank accounts immediately.”
