Chapter 11 - The Panic Sets In

|

Derek froze mid-lunge, his arms suspended in the air, his eyes darting frantically from the police officer’s gun to Evelyn’s face.

“What the hell is this?!” Derek shouted, his voice cracking with sudden, unhinged panic. “Who are you?! Get out of my wife’s room!”

“I am Detective Vance with the City Police Department, sir,” the officer said, taking a step forward and unclipping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “And you are currently trespassing in a crime scene intervention.”

“Trespassing?!” Brenda shrieked, her voice reaching a high-pitched, hysterical pitch. “This is my son! That is his wife! This is a private family matter!”

“It stopped being a private family matter the moment you shattered her tibia with a deadly weapon, Mrs. Vance,” Evelyn stepped forward, her heels clicking crisply against the tile floor. “I suggest you keep your mouth shut before you add additional counts of felony intimidation to your indictment.”

Derek backed up against the window, his confidence completely collapsing. He fumbled in his jacket pocket, pulling out his personal phone.

“I’m calling my lawyer,” Derek stammered, his fingers trembling violently as he tried to unlock the screen. “This is a setup! She’s crazy! She fell down the stairs!”

“You can call your lawyer from the precinct, Mr. Vance,” Detective Vance said coldly. “Because as of five minutes ago, Judge Miller signed a no-bail warrant for your arrest, as well as an emergency protective order covering your wife.”

Derek’s father, Arthur, who had been standing silently by the door, suddenly backed out into the hallway, raising his hands in the air.

“I had nothing to do with this!” Arthur babbled, abandoning his wife and son instantly. “I told them to take her to the hospital! I told them it was wrong!”

“Shut up, Arthur!” Brenda screamed, turning on her husband with pure rage. “You coward!”
