Chapter 12 - Meanwhile at the House

|

While Derek and Brenda were screaming at each other in my hospital room, three miles away, a fleet of four marked police cruisers and a forensic crime scene van pulled up to Derek’s quiet suburban driveway.

Neighbours gathered along the sidewalk, whispering and recording on their phones as armed officers breached the front door with a master key.

Leading the search team was Sergeant Sarah Torres.

“Secure the premises!” Sergeant Torres ordered as officers swept through the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms. “Forensic team, focus on the kitchen, the pantry, and the back coal chute.”

Within ten minutes, the crime scene investigators hit the jackpot.

Inside the kitchen, despite Brenda’s rushed attempts to scrub the room with bleach two days prior, specialized luminol spray revealed a massive splatter of blood glowing bright blue across the lower tile floor right beside the stove.

In the pantry, hidden behind a stack of canned soup, an investigator using heavy rubber gloves pulled out the heavy wooden rolling pin. The dark oak wood was split near the handle from the force of the impact, and dried blood was clearly embedded in the grain.

“We’ve got the primary weapon,” the forensic tech announced, placing the rolling pin into a clear plastic evidence bag.

Moments later, another officer called out from the back of the house.

“Sergeant! Look at this coal chute!”

The grate had been bent open, and fresh scrapings of blood and fabric were caught on the rusty metal screws where I had squeezed through.

The evidence was overwhelming, indisputable, and completely preserved.
