Chapter 2 - The Crawl to Freedom

“We’ll deal with her tomorrow,” Derek added, his voice chillingly calculated as he walked toward the living room. “Tomorrow we’ll tell the neighbors she tripped and fell down the basement stairs. After this, she’ll have to quit her corporate marketing job and stay home. Then, we can finally control her.”
My father-in-law, Arthur, hesitated in the doorway, looking mildly uncomfortable.
“Derek, shouldn’t we at least give her some ice? She looks pale.”
“She’ll be fine, Dad,” Derek snapped, ordering takeout on his phone. “She’s dramatic. A night on the floor will straighten her attitude out.”

When the house finally fell dead silent around two in the morning, I knew I had a single choice: escape now, or never walk again.
Biting down hard on the collar of my shirt to muffle my agonized whimpers, I turned onto my stomach. Dragging my dead weight using only my forearms and elbows, I dragged myself inch by inch toward the small back pantry door. Every minor twitch of my shattered leg felt like a dagger twisting in my flesh.

Reaching the pantry wall, my trembling fingers searched the lower shelf until I felt the cool, rusted metal of an old tool set. I pulled out a flathead bottle opener and began desperately unscrewing the wooden ventilation grate near the floor that led to the old coal chute.
Tonight, my abusive family slept peacefully, believing their cage was secure. They had no idea I was crawling out into the night.
